Tips For Fishing With Children

Fishing The art of fishing is a near rite of passage for many families, as it is a skill that is handed down from generation to generation, and for good reason– there are many valuable lessons to be learned from fishing and it’s an opportunity to bond and create memories with family.

If this is your first time taking your kids fishing, it’s smart to plan ahead. Here are a few tips to help make the adventure fun, engaging and mostly, memorable for you both.

  • Safety is the first priority. If you plan on fishing on a boat, you will want to make sure you have a life jacket that your child should wear at all times. If you are fishing on shore, just be sure you are with your child at all times.
  • Take into consideration the equipment you will be using. Little hands require smaller rods and can’t bait their own lines. Fake bait will be easier and safer to teach your child with.
  • Time frame will be minimized the younger the child. Toddler aged children don’t have the attention span you sometimes need for fishing. Keeping this first experience at a minimum will help to entice your child to want to try fishing again.
  • Make it fun. Serious fishing can require an incredible amount of concentration and patience. When fishing with your child, keep it light and fun and mistakes that are made should be laughed at. Remember, you are making memories together.
  • Bring snacks and beverages to help pass the time. Food is a big part of bonding experiences and don’t forget to pack something special.
